Building a Safer HID Automation Lab

A practical framework for running HID automation tests in controlled environments without turning demos into messy evidence.

Start with the lab contract

A good HID automation lab starts with a contract, even when the work is internal. Write down which machines are in scope, which accounts may be used, which controls are being validated, and what counts as a stop condition. This does not need to be legal theater. It needs to be clear enough that another operator could repeat the test without guessing.

For most teams, the useful minimum is a target machine, an operator workstation, a reset path, and a place to store evidence. Avoid testing against personal devices, mixed-use laptops, or production systems unless the authorization explicitly covers them. The lab should feel controlled enough that a failed test is boring, recoverable, and easy to explain.

Separate experiments from repeatable checks

The mistake many labs make is treating every script like a reusable test. Experiments are allowed to be messy. Repeatable checks are not. Keep them in different folders and name them differently. An experimental script can answer a question. A repeatable check should prove one expected behavior and produce evidence that a defender can trust.

Use short names that describe the control being tested. Good names look like policy checks, not stunts. A script called "locked-workstation-input-check" is easier to review than a dramatic name that hides the actual goal. The naming discipline makes the lab safer and improves the report later.

Record the environment every time

HID behavior depends on details that are easy to forget. Keyboard layout, operating system, lock state, user privilege, endpoint policy, and firmware mode can all change the result. Capture those details before each run. If the outcome changes, you will have something to compare.

  • Target operating system and version.
  • Keyboard layout and locale.
  • User privilege level.
  • Lock or unlock state.
  • Endpoint security policy state.
  • Device firmware and dashboard profile.

This information is not busywork. It is what turns a demo into a valid security observation.

Make evidence boring on purpose

Strong evidence is usually quiet. It shows the starting state, the action performed, and the observed result. It avoids unnecessary personal data and does not include more screen content than the finding requires. A short clip, a timestamped screenshot, and a concise operator note are often enough.

Avoid building reports around a full recording of every keystroke. That creates review burden and may capture sensitive content unrelated to the test. Keep raw notes internally, then write the client-facing finding around the control objective.

Test failure paths too

Labs often focus on whether a test succeeds. Defenders also need to know how failure looks. If the device is blocked, does the endpoint alert? If input is delayed, is that expected? If a user prompt appears, does it provide a useful explanation? If nothing happens, is silence the intended behavior?

These failure paths are useful because they reveal gaps in detection and response. A blocked device with no alert may still be a weak control. A clear alert with the wrong routing may be an operations problem. A user prompt that nobody understands may be a training problem.

Keep destructive actions out of templates

Reusable HID templates should avoid destructive operations. If a test must change state, isolate that action and write a rollback note beside it. The safer default is to verify input, telemetry, prompt behavior, and policy response before touching anything persistent.

Templates should be boring, documented, and small. If a script tries to prove five things at once, split it. Smaller tests are easier to review, easier to rerun, and easier to defend in a report.

Close the loop with defenders

The lab is not finished when the script runs. It is finished when the control owner understands what happened and what to improve. Send findings in a format that maps directly to action: expected behavior, observed behavior, impact, evidence, and recommendation.

That structure keeps the conversation practical. It also makes the lab valuable to both offensive and defensive teams. The point is not to impress anyone with hardware. The point is to help the organization make better decisions about its controls.
