ZeroTrace AirLeak Pro
GPS (Optional Add-On)
Add a GPS module for standalone wardriving without a phone
AirLeak Pro is GPS-ready: the board has an on-board GPS header where you can fit a GPS module. A module isn't fitted by default, and for most people it isn't needed, the app already tags your survey using your phone's GPS.
On a drive, the ZeroTrace app tags every observation with your phone's GPS. That's the default, and it's all most users ever need. The on-board GPS header is for a specific extra: running the board without a phone.
What the GPS header adds
Fit a GPS module to the header and AirLeak Pro can wardrive on its own, tagging its own captures with location, without needing a phone nearby. That's useful when you want the board to run standalone, for example a set-and-forget in-vehicle logger, rather than being tethered to the app for its location.
| Default (no module) | With a GPS module | |
|---|---|---|
| Where location comes from | Your phone's GPS (via the app) | The board's own GPS |
| Needs a phone during the drive | Yes | No, it can log standalone |
| Best for | Normal app-driven surveys | Auto / unattended wardriving |
Getting a fix
Whichever GPS is providing the location, phone or on-board module, it needs a clear view of the sky.
No fix indoors is normal. Take it outside with an open view and give it time, a cold first fix can take a few minutes, after which it re-locks quickly. Metal roofs and tinted/heated windscreens attenuate GPS, so in a vehicle place the receiver near a window with a view up.
Optional to operation
GPS of any kind is optional to capturing. AirLeak Pro scans Wi-Fi and Bluetooth with or without a location fix, without one you simply don't get location stamps on that data. So you can start capturing immediately and let the fix catch up.
Fitting a module is an optional upgrade. If you only ever survey with the app open, your phone's GPS already covers you, no module required.
